To Plant or Not to Plant Trees and Shrubs in Late Fall or Winter?

If you are on the fence about whether to plant a tree or shrub late-fall or even winter, the answer is a simple one. Go ahead and plant them.

As long as the ground is workable, you can go ahead and have a tree or shrub planted in your yard late in the season. They will be happy to be in the ground where they will have room and time to establish roots before the ground freezes.

We have planted well into December with success, so if you are looking to plant some trees or shrubs over the next few weeks, be sure to keep these tips in mind to help them through the winter:

  1. After planting your tree, use compost and mulch to keep it moist.
  2. Natural mulch is used to protect the roots and keep them warm during the winter.
  3. Keep your trees and shrubs watered. It's important to water your newly planted trees until the ground freezes. The wind and sun can dry out plants rather quickly.
  4. If your tree likes acidic soil, consider using holly tone
  5. Don’t forget to put down a winterizer on your lawn to help store more food for the winter, and to encourage growth in the spring.
